US governmental response

In late January 2020, the Trump Administration announced that starting February 2, Americans returning from certain parts of China would be quarantined: “U.S. citizens who have been in China’s Hubei Province for the past two weeks, and who have been in Hubei Province, China, and the U.S. States must undergo health screening and be monitored for up to 14 days during the mandatory quarantine.”

On February 24, the Trump administration asked Congress for $2.5 billion in emergency assistance to combat the outbreak. On the same day, while traveling to official stores in India, President Trump tweeted that “the coronavirus is very much under control in the United States. We are in contact with each and every relevant country” 

On February 25, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said at a press conference: “We hope that the virus community will spread in this country.”

On February 26, President Trump charged Vice President Mike Pence with responsibility for the nation’s response to the virus.
